9:08 pm on 5 September 2009

A worker has been killed in an explosion at a work site in Greymouth.

Kieran John Hudson, 21, of Greymouth died when a bitumen tank blew up just after 9.30am on Friday.

Police say Mr Hudson, who worked for sub-contractor Equip, was welding on an 18,000-litre storage tank when it exploded on the Fulton Hogan site at South Beach.

One local said the ground shook and the explosion sounded like a "super-sonic bang".

Fulton Hogan says it is shocked at the death and the company's chief executive has flown to Greymouth.

The Department of Labour is investigating the incident.
