Man arrested after pursuit of breadtruck

A Palmerston North man has been arrested following a 60km pursuit of a stolen bread delivery truck between Foxton and Otaki.

Police say the truck was hijacked by a man with a hammer while the driver was making deliveries in Foxton shortly before 3am on Friday. The delivery man's dog was inside the vehicle.

Inspector Paul Jermy says police caught up with the man on State Highway One and pursued him south for more than 60km to Otaki Beach and back onto the highway.

The truck's tyres were spiked at Otaki Beach, but the driver continued for some time before stopping.

Even though the pursuit lasted 65 minutes, police say it did not exceed 110km per hour because the bread truck could not go any faster.
