A man is critically ill in the intensive care unit of Waikato Hospital, after a crash near Rotorua on Thursday night in which a child, aged two years, was killed.
Reports from ambulance staff attending the scene suggest a high speed head-on collision between two vehicles in Minginui.
The man, 33, was airlifted to Rotorua Hospital where his condition was stabilised, before being transferred to Waikato Hospital.
He has head and chest injuries and his condition is described as critical, but stable.
A third passenger in the same vehicle escaped with cuts and bruises.
