Institute scraps Maori department

Manukau Institute of Technology is scrapping its dedicated Maori Department.

The South Auckland institute's acting Maori director, Tony Spelman, says Maori courses are being mainstreamed as part of a review of how all departments at the polytechnic attract and teach Maori students.

He told Waatea News most Maori students are enrolled in business courses rather than Maori-focused subjects.

The plan is to open up and change the whole institute, so it is more receptive and competent to work with tikanga Maori in business, horticulture, the maritime school and other areas, Mr Spelman says.
