Council delays decision on methyl bromide

5:38 pm on 17 September 2009

The Marlborough District Council has decided to delay making any decision on future use of the fumigant methyl bromide.

About 70 protesters took their concerns to the council on Thursday. They are calling for an immediate end to using the gas to fumigate logs at Picton's Shakespeare Bay, saying there are too many unknown health dangers.

Councillors decided to delay action, pending a reassessment of the gas by the Environmental Risk Management Authority.
