Wellington to become 'fair trade' city

5:58 am on 19 September 2009

Wellington City Council has unanimously voted to become a 'fair trade' city - the first in New Zealand.

Earlier this month the council received a petition signed by more than 1100 in support of the move.

Mayor Kerry Prendergast, says more than 600 cities worldwide have shown a commitment to 'fair trade.'

She says that although 'fair trade' does not proffer a complete solution to the issue of equity in international trade, it does provide a starting point.
