Fire out after explosion at substation

3:12 pm on 22 September 2009

Fire fighters have managed to put out a blaze at Wellington's main power substation on Tuesday.

The Fire Service had to wait two hours for the power supply to be switched off before they could enter the Haywards substation, between Lower and Upper Hutt.

The fire started at 11.40am Tuesday after workers attempted to reinstall a piece of equipment which led to an explosion at the substation, a key part of the national grid.

All workers have now been accounted for and no one was injured.
