Two police officers and a police dog were injured when they confronted an intruder armed with a knife at a Christchurch house.

The police were called to the property at Coppell Place in Hoon Hay about 4.15am on Wednesday.

They say an intruder confronted a couple who were in bed in their home. The couple convinced him to go outside while their son called the police.

Senior Sergeant Rob Patterson says one officer was repeatedly stabbed, but was saved from serious injury by a stab-proof vest. The police dog "Koal" and his handler suffered cuts.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested and is receiving treatment for a dog bite at Christchurch Hospital.
