The armed offenders squad has been stood down in the Lower Hutt suburb of Wainuiomata after a gang related callout on Friday.
Residents say they heard a shot ring out across Castlerea Street just before 1pm.
Officers are speaking with neighbours regarding the incident.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell says no one was injured in a run-in between two groups of males who are understood to be gang associates.
Mr Borrell would not say exactly what went on at the house while a scene investigation continues.
However, neighbours say the area has a notorious gang presence and this type of incident is not uncommon.
Mr Borrell says charges are likely.
