The direct road between Tauranga and Rotorua is to partially reopen on Monday, after being closed for nearly eight weeks due to a rockfall which crushed a car.
The Transport Agency says work to secure the rockface above State Highway 36 in the Mangorewa Gorge has been completed.
The road will open from 4pm until 9am, but will remain closed during the day as scheduled improvement works continue.
The highway will return to 24-hour operation in two weeks.
A spokesman for the Transport Agency says regular users have faced a long diversion, but the safety of motorists and contractors is the top priority.
