A 23-year-old man is in a stable but critical condition following a drive-by shooting in the South Auckland suburb of Otara on Wednesday night.
A car pulled up alongside the man while he and a friend were walking along O'Connor Rd, police say.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Pizzini says someone in the vehicle called the victim by his first name and fired a single shot at closer range.
The injured man has undergone surgery at Middlemore Hospital.
Detective Senior Sergeant Pizzini says it is not clear whether a handgun or a rifle was used, though it is known that the weapon was not a shotgun.
He says it is too early to comment on whether the shooting was gang-related.
Police are looking for a silver car described as a hatchback sedan with mag wheels and tinted windows.
