Makeover maybe at Lyall Bay

1:15 pm on 4 October 2009

A fire at a popular Wellington cafe in August could lead to a makeover along the beach front at Lyall Bay.

A building review has been ordered by Wellington City Council.

The fire prompted a round of fund-raising for proprietors of the cafe by sympathetic residents.

Lyall Bay is the only surf beach in the city.

The council says it must now decide whether the premises should be rebuilt, and if so, what should happen to others there.

The council says rebuilding could cost $750,000 and it might make sense to house all organisations using the beach, especially two surf life saving clubs, in one premises.
