First wind powered supermarket opens in Christchurch

What's been billed as the country's greenest supermarket has just opened its doors on the outskirts of Christchurch.

The Lincoln New World boasts a myriad of environmental features - including its own electricity generation from two, nine-metre high wind turbines.

A Foodstuffs South Island spokesperson Roger Davidson says on a windy day the turbines will generate enough electricity to power the carpark lights and supply some of the building's electricity needs.

Mr Davidson says wind turbines will be introduced at other supermarkets if the concept is successful.
