A Swiss tourist lost in Tongariro National Park has been winched to safety by Wellington's rescue helicopter.
Crewman Colin Larsen says the man, who was cold and bruised, was found about 2am on Thursday just south of Waikune.
Mr Larsen says searchers had intermittent cell phone contact with the man, but his dark clothing made him difficult to find in the terrain.
