A man has been seriously injured in an assault in central Wellington.
Police were called by ambulance staff about 5.45am on Thursday to the corner of Tory and Wakefield streets where the man had been found.
Police say the man was tackled and held on the ground while someone repeatedly stabbed him in the head and back.
The 23-year-old is in a stable condition in a Wellington hospital on Thursday night.
Police are appealing for information from members of the public who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area.
