Council told to repair steps after fatal fall

The steps from which a Wellington man fell to his death nearly two years ago are to be repaired and maintained following a coroner's finding.

Michael John Webby plunged 12 metres down a set of 60 steep steps leading to his Glenmore St house, which had no handrail, no lighting and no vegetation to break his fall.

He had been returning home from a football match in December 2007.

Coroner Ian Smith said Wellington City Council should carry out a maintenance review of the steps and undertake any necessary maintenance.

He ruled Mr Webby died from blunt force trauma to the head.
