Search for kayakers reassessed

10:07 pm on 11 October 2009

The search for a group of kayakers who may have got into trouble off Kaka Point near Balclutha has been stood down overnight.

A member of the public reported seeing four kayakers and a person in an inflatable canoe struggling in high seas at about midday on Sunday.

A search was made of the coastline using a helicopter, boats and a fixed wing aircraft on Sunday afternoon but there has been no sign of the group.

Lindsay Sturt, from the Rescue Coordination Centre in Wellington says a decision will be made on Monday morning about whether to resume the search.

He says no one's been reported missing, and it's pretty unlikely five kayaks would be missed in the search.

Mr Sturt says it's possible the kayakers may have come ashore safely, and anyone with any information should contact the police.
