Marae urged to take up garden grant

An advocate for Maori organic farming says marae should take advantage of a programme to re-establish gardens or maara kai.

Percy Tipene from Te Waka Kaiora group of growers, says an offer by the Ministry of Maori Development, Te Puni Kokiri, of $2000 grants for marae gardens is a chance for Maori to reconnect with the land.

He told Waatea News it does not matter if conventional or organic farming practises are used, as long as people learn the benefits of growing their own food.
