Otago University bans alcohol sponsorship, advertising

The University of Otago has banned alcohol advertising and sponsorship on its campuses and at university-organised events off-campus.

Vice-Chancellor Sir David Skegg says the move is in response to what he describes as a binge drinking culture among youth.

The ban has been adopted by the University Council and applies to all of its campuses across the country.

The most high-profile event to be affected is Orientation, a series of activities held each February to welcome students to the university.

Beer company Speight's is a major sponsor of the event, which is organised by the University Students Association.
