Police in Hamilton say they need help from the public to apprehend a man who burst into a woman's home on Sunday evening brandishing a hand gun, before he does it again.

They say the man threatened the woman and demanded money and cigarettes before fleeing.

The woman was working at her computer at the time when the man entered through a ranchslider. Her children were sleeping in the house at the time.

Detective Sergeant Dave Grace says the man needs to be caught before he subjects anyone else to the same ordeal or does something worse.

He is described as Maori or Polynesian, aged between 16 and 20 and clean shaven.

The man was wearing black sunglasses, a black leather trench coat and shorts that went to just below his knees.
