A former ambulance driver has admitted sexually assaulting three patients in the back of the vehicle while taking them to hospital in Auckland.

James Brent Henderson, 36, pleaded guilty to the charges at a sentence indication hearing at the Auckland District Court this week.

The charges related to separate incidents that happened during 1999 and included a girl, aged 16, who had been injured in a car crash.

He was convicted of five charges of indecent assault last year but the convictions were quashed and a retrial ordered because the Court of Appeal had concerns about comments to the jury by the trial judge.

The court has indicated Henderson will face a non-custodial sentence such as supervision or home detention.
