Shopping arcade evacuated

A suspected gas leak forced the evacuation of the Old Bank shopping arcade in downtown Wellington on Friday.

The Fire Service was called just after 9am to investigate reports of methane smells in the area, although no flammable gas was detected.

Wellington City Council says the odour was "pungent and unpleasant" and suspects it was emanating from the building's drains.

It was the second such report of a gas smell from the site in two days and drainage engineers are speaking to the building's owners.
