Murupara gang supports idea of truce with rival

The president of the Tribesmen gang in the Bay of Plenty township of Murupara says it supports the idea of signing a peace pact with its rival, the Mongrel Mob.

The local iwi, Ngati Manawa, placed a rahui or ban on violence and the wearing of gang colours in Murupara about two weeks ago after suspicions the deaths of two people were gang-related.

Ngati Manawa called on the gangs to agree to a truce to help reduce violence.

The head of the Murupara chapter of the Tribesmen, Peter Hunt, says it is behind the idea as long as it will help to reduce violence in the township.
