A 70 year old whitebaiter in the South Island has been flown to hospital with a dislocated hip after dragging himself for several hours to get help.

A Summit Rescue Helicopter spokesperson says the man was in great pain after he slipped at Mangarakau, in the Tasman District, at about 9am on Friday.

It took him five hours to drag himself 50m to his car, where he made a flag from a stick and a white cloth.

Passing motorists saw him waving the flag and stopped their car, before attending to him and calling for help.

The rescue helicopter crew flew him to Nelson Hospital.
