The Auckland Regional Council is to offer a summer holiday with a difference for Aucklanders keen to act as hosts at popular campgrounds.
The council needs hosts for three regional parks: Whakanewha on Waiheke Island, Waharau in the foothills of the Hunua Ranges, and Awhitu on the southwest shores of Manukau Harbour.
Senior ranger Wayne Carlson says in exchange for a few hours of work each week, camp hosts will receive a free campsite for themselves and their immediate family.
Duties include welcoming new campers, issuing permits, keeping the peace and some maintenance. There is a minimum three-week stay and training will be provided, he says.
