Wellington police say they are alarmed at the case of a mother who allowed her 13-year-old daughter to take the wheel and drive along a stretch of State Highway 1 on Sunday.

Another younger child was also in the vehicle, which was stopped by officers who noticed the car was being driven erratically.

Police say the 45-year-old woman, who holds only an expired licence, told them her daughter was driving as she had a toothache. She said she thought this was alright as the girl was nearly 14 .

Police say the woman has been issued with several notices of traffic offences.
