A man has been stabbed eight times in a fight involving a knife and a vacuum cleaner pipe in South Otago.

Police say a man is accused of punching a woman following an argument at Inch Clutha, 10km south of Balclutha, early on Saturday.

The police say when her partner intervened, the man stabbed him eight times in his face and upper torso.

The man is also accused of stabbing his own partner in the elbow as she too tried to stop the fight.

Attempts were made to quell him by hitting him over the head with a vacuum cleaner pipe.

A man, 35, is in a stable condition in Dunedin Hospital following surgery.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with causing grevious bodily harm. Police say further charges are likely.
