The pilot who died in a light plane crash in Taranaki on Sunday has been named. He was Colin Greatrex, 52, of Auckland.

Civil Aviation Authority investigators will spend the day at the scene of a fatal light plane crash near Stratford in Taranaki.

The small bi-winged plane, a Pitts Special, was travelling between Ohakea and Ardmore airports when crashed it on Sunday.

A police search and rescue squad found the plane on farm land after its beacon was activated.
