A Lower Hutt man who admitted forging a passport has escaped a jail sentence.

Mark Davidson, 36, was also sentenced in the Wellington District Court on two charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and theft from vehicles.

Judge John Walker said Davidson had a long list of previous convictions and in 2002 used another person's identity to get a passport and travel to Australia to start a new life.

Davidson married and started a family in Australia and a number of references were before the court detailing the positive changes he had made in his life.

In sentencing him to four months' home detention, Judge Walker said Davidson had not committed any crimes in Australia and had entered an early guilty plea to the charges.
