A toddler hit by a taxi in central Hamilton was saved by a group of bystanders.

Police say the girl, who is two years 10-months old, was pinned under the taxi's left wheel arch after stepping out in front of the taxi at the city's Transport Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

They say bystanders lifted the car off the child, and she was assisted by a doctor who was a passenger in the taxi.

She is in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital.
