Kaikoura council considers scrapping 1080 drops

10:38 am on 18 November 2009

The Kaikoura District Council is discussing the possibility of scrapping the use of 1080 poison in its region, in order to maintain a clean, green image.

The idea stems from discussions the mayor, Kevin Heays says he has had with many residents and tourism operators, who he says would like to see and end to 1080 poison drops, used to control pests like possums and stoats.

Mr Heays says the council will vote on Wednesday on whether to set up a working party that would have members both for and against 1080 use.

That group would report back on the best strategy for the region.
