A Rotorua man says he may chop down trees in his garden to help the local airport, but he wants compensation.
Geoff Fischer lives a kilometre away from the airport's runway, and because of trees on his property international Airbus 320 flights can only go ahead with the planes partially full. Civil aviation regulations require flightpaths to be clear of possible hazards.
A recent decision by the Environment Court found the trees could remain in place and at full height.
Mr Fischer says they're valued at $147,000 and this amount of compensation could bring him to chop them down. They hold both environmental and sentimental value, he says.
