Police appeal for information about mystery skull

11:39 pm on 2 December 2009

The police in Northland are appealing for information about a mystery skull found last month on a Dargaville beach.

A post mortem examination has found its owner was probably European, aged 30-50, who had been killed by a gunshot, possibly self-inflicted.

The person had a gold filling.

The police say a guitar pick and strings found nearby are not related to the case and they are mystified as to how the skull came to be in anyone's possession, let alone why they buried it in sandhills at Glinks Gully.

They would like to return the skull to its rightful resting place, and want to hear from anyone who can identify it.
