Athletes compete in IronMaori triathlon

10:00 am on 5 December 2009

More than 300 people are taking part in a triathlon aimed at Maori people in Napier on Saturday.

In the first IronMaori event, competitors have to finish a 21km run, cycle for 90km and swim for 2.5km - all in about 10 hours.

One of the organisers, Heather Skipworth, says the name of the event was chosen to attract Maori, but the triathlon is open to everyone.

Ms Skipworth says organisers want to increase the scale of the event next year, to allow for more competitors.
