Clean-up in Coromandel after weekend flooding

10:50 am on 6 December 2009

Council workers are clearing slips and fallen trees on the Coromandel Peninsula after weekend flooding.

Several roads were closed and some homes flooded in heavy rain on Friday night and early Saturday morning.

Thames Coromandel District mayor Philippa Barriball says most of the damage was on the eastern seaboard and the council is prioritising cleaning up fallen trees and slips that are putting people at risk.

But she says flooding is reasonably common in the area, so the council and community has a quick response system to help with recovery.
