Inmates at a King Country prison have come up smelling of roses again, with their blooms taking major prizes at a second flower show.
The four inmates, involved in the care and maintenance of roses at Waikeria Prison, took 12 prizes including six first places and three trophies at a show in Otorohanga.
They won the bowl for the most points in the novice section and two Champion of Show cups for the best exhibition bloom and fully open bloom.
Prison manager Paul O'Byrne says tending the prison's roses is a source of pride for the inmates and helps them work towards trade qualifications and they had no idea they would be entered into competitions.
The prison was invited to exhibit at Otorohanga after winning five prizes at a show in Te Awamutu.
