26 drivers under influence caught

3:33 pm on 7 December 2009

Police in Tauranga caught 26 drunk or drugged drivers in the Western Bay of Plenty during the weekend.

One was a mother who had driven 200km from Auckland with three young children.

Just after midnight on Sunday the woman, 30, was caught at a checkpoint in Mount Maunganui, at more than two-and-a-half times the legal breath alcohol limit.

She was arrested at a mobile "booze bus" after refusing a blood test and becoming disruptive.

She told police her last drink was in Auckland so her level of intoxication may have been much higher during the journey.

Other motorists had followed her woman from Waihi, observing her driving behaviour.
