Nelson and Tauranga are jousting to claim the title of New Zealand's sunniest centre.
Nelson lost the crown it had held for a decade to Blenheim two years ago is now close to regaining it.
By the end of November, Nelson had enjoyed 2309 hours of sunshine.
That's 54 more than Tauranga, with Blenheim a distant third.
Mayor Kerry Marshall is confident the sun will shine enough in December for the city to reclaim its familiar bragging rights.
Official NIWA sunshine figures for 2009 will be known in early January.
As for the major centres, Christchurch holds a small lead over Auckland and Hamilton with Wellington next to last ahead of Dunedin.
