Bar owners to put up name-and-shame lists

5:02 pm on 11 December 2009

Bar and pub owners in Hamilton are making a name-and-shame list of known troublemakers whom they will ban from their premises.

The plan is the idea of the group Alcohol Accord, which says sharing information will keep out the small percentage of people displaying anti-social behaviour, like fighting.

The group's chairman, bar owner Laurie Weake, says names will be put on a list that will be displayed in all participating venues.

He says they're taking action because bars and pubs often get blamed for alcohol-fuelled behaviour over which they have no control.

Mr Weake says the initiative will be up and running in the next couple of months but it's yet to be decided how long people will be banned for.
