Kaikoura battered by wind for an hour

6:59 pm on 12 December 2009

Heavy winds that battered Kaikoura, blowing the roofs off at least two houses, have abated.

Some power lines went down and a number of trees fell on State Highway 1 on Saturday, and there were also reports of campervans being blown across the highway.

MetService had issued a severe weather warning on Friday night. Forecaster Ian Miller says that up to 140m of rain and winds up to 130kmh swept over parts of the North and South islands overnight.

Kaikoura's volunteer fire brigade says it has been flat out attending to callouts. Luckily, it says, no one has been injured in any of the incidents. "It all happened in about an hour," says brigade chief Ian Walker.
