Wellington mayor Kerry Prendergast is heading for Copenhagen to attend a mayoral summit on climate change.
Mayors from the world's 40 biggest capital cities are among more than 60 who will be at the summit.
Ms Prendergast will be representing both Wellington and Local Government New Zealand.
As New Zealand is surrounded by oceans, Ms Prendergast says this is an opportunity to discuss solutions on key issues such as sea-level rises, increased flooding and storm events.
Many major cities have already encountered these problems and it is much better to learn from them than to try to reinvent the wheel, she says.
