Police are investigating the drowning of a teenage boy near Gisborne on Saturday evening.
The 17-year-old, from Hastings, had been scuba diving with family members at Tatapouri Beach, when he drowned at about 6pm.
He was brought to shore in a boat - and was attended to by ambulance staff, but had already died.
Police won't release further details about his identity until they've advised his next of kin.
