Lucky escape when train clips car

9:02 am on 20 December 2009

A driver had a lucky escape when the car he had parked beside a railway crossing near Auckland was hit by a train.

The police say the incident happened at about 3.45am on Sunday on the Kellyville Rd railway crossing just north of Mercer, south of Auckland.

They say the man's car became stuck when he drove it onto a patch of grass beside the tracks, and while he was standing on the road trying to flag down help a train clipped the side of the car and wrote it off.

Nobody was hurt in the crash.
