A private firm has offered a cash reward of $5000 for information leading to the successful prosecution of anyone who hurts Moko the dolphin.
The bottle-nosed dolphin has been an attraction in the Gisborne area for the past few years, interacting regularly with swimmers and surfers.
Ten days ago, members of the public reported seeing a group of people punching the dolphin, but the information came to the Department of Conservation's attention too late to do anything.
The Enterprise Motor Group has now put up a $5000 reward for information on any further cases of cruelty.
This follows the creation of Moko Minders, a group of volunteers who will follow the dolphin every day until the end of January.
