Marriage licence includes the 'h' in Whanganui

Daniel Paranihi of Whanganui has had partial success in getting a 'h' included on his marriage certificate.

He is marrying Atiria Adlam at Tokorangi Marae near Marton on New Year's Eve and wanted the licence to reflect the newly approved spelling.

However, Waatea News reports Mr Paranihi was told it could not be done when he applied to the registrar for a marriage licence with the letter 'h' included.

He tried to get that decision reversed and says the Justice Department has now advised that although it's not permitted at the top of the document, 'h' can be included in the section relating to where he is from and his place of birth.
