Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink is warning people not to swim in some of the region's rivers where toxic algae is growing.
He says warm dry weather is providing perfect conditions for large amounts of cyanobacterium phormidium, or blue-green algae, to grow in the Ashley and Pareora rivers and in the downstream reaches of the Opihi River.
Canterbury Regional Council has also issued a general warning about the algae.
