Dunedin was the hottest location in New Zealand on Christmas Day.
MetService says a high of 32 degrees was recorded there on Friday as a high pressure front brought warm temperatures to most of the country.
But the weather is likely to cool on Saturday, with a cold front moving across the Tasman, which is due to reach the South Island in the morning.
