Charges over fatal car smash near Gisborne in August

A Te Puke man has been charged with two counts of manslaughter as a result of a fatal car crash near Gisborne in early August.

Police in Gisborne laid the charges on Tuesday.

A 14-year-old girl and a 23-year-old man died when the vehicle they were in left State Highway 2 just north of Gisborne and smashed into a concrete wall.

Two other people in the car were injured.

The accused, 24, has been bailed after an initial court appearance.

He faces two other charges of excess blood alcohol causing injury.

He is due back in the Gisborne District Court on 20 January.
