Water polo club helps restore school pool

A Wellington water polo club has helped a primary school to reopen a swimming pool closed for 10 years.

The principal of Berhampore Primary School, Mark Potter, says the pool became a dumping ground for old furniture after it was closed in the late 1990s when the micro-organism cryptosporidium infected pools in the Wellington region.

Because of the partnership between the Harbourside Water Polo Club and the school, he says, the pool is seen as a community asset, making it easier to raise money from the Community Trust and the city council for the refurbishment.

A new filter system and gas heater has been installed so the pool can be used for eight months of the year.

Mr Potter says the water polo club and other primary schools will be able to use the pool.
