Motorists on State Highway 1 between Warkworth and Waiwera face delays of several hours on Sunday due to congestion on the main route to Auckland.
The Automobile Association says traffic is built up on both the north-bound and the south-bound lanes.
Police in Wellington also say drivers are facing delays on the Kapiti Coast and Paremata Esplanade.
